How We Remove Green Screen Using Color Range Tool In Photoshop?

Removing the green screen from a photo using the Color Range tool is one of the conventional methods that people use.

Step 1: Get the selection
To do that is a better way, you have to open your photo that has a green screen. First of all, duplicate the image layer and name it. Then go into Select and click on Color Range. So, basically, how this thing works is that we are just selecting the green colors. For doing that, use the Eye Drop tool from the Color Range window. Then choose on the portion of the image that has a green screen.
Then from the same window, check the Inverted. It will enable you to see the image in Black & White color and change the Black to Grayscale. Basically, we do this because we want the background of the image to be Black, and we want the foreground to be White. The white is what is showing, and the black is the part that we don’t want. Use the Eye Drop (+) Plus or (-) Minus to make the foreground completely White.
We use the Fuzziness meter up and down to get a more accurate result. If we take it down, it is going to be a lot more selective of the colors. And if we take it all the way up, it is going to be selecting too many colors. We don’t need any of these. So, let’s leave this Fuzziness down the middle and click Ok.

Step 2: Masking
Click on the selection mask to continue with the procedure. And now, we will input in our Yellow background. You can put in any background you want. Then press Ctrl T drag the background to increase the size. Afterward, double click on the Yellow background layer and drag that down under the primary layer.
Now what we are going to do is press Ctrl and + to zoom in. Now, look at the edges. It does not suppose to look good at all. So, make sure to click on the Mask. To do that, go into Refine Mask and check the Smart Radius and increase that a bit. Play a little with the Feather, Edges, and anything that you want. Then check the Determinate Colors and change as required to get rid of the green around the model of the image. Press Ok then.
If you see a bit black line around your model, go to Adjustment Levels, and change the Input levels to disappear the Blackline completely. Yes, there is an actual tool in Photoshop that allows erasing the background. So, we are not talking about any selections or masks. You will be amazed to know how powerful and customizable this tool can be. Sometimes, it is so accurate and fantastic. And you can guess how important it can be if you don’t have a green screen to take photos.
But why don’t we use it or do not talk about it very much? There is one significant drawback this tool has. In this part of the article, you are going to learn how to use it, and also we will see whether we can solve that drawback. So, without any further, let’s get started.

Destructive Process: Part 1
First of all, we will open the magical world of Photoshop and open a portrait photo that we want to edit. So, let’s look at where the tool actually. On the left side of the Photoshop UI, you will see all the tools that we use for editing purposes. Find the Eraser Tool right there. Click and hold on it. Take a look at the tools under the group. We will select the second one. It literally says the Background Eraser Tool. Now select that.
Before jumping in the next step, make sure to make a copy of the background layer of the raw photo for backup. Press Ctrl + J for PC users and Command + J for Mac users.
Now, go ahead and create a solid color adjustment layer. To do that, click on the Adjustment Layer icon, which is located in the lower right of the interface and select the Solid Color. We are going to choose a color like black and then hit OK. In the next step, bring down the Solid Color Adjustment Layer under Layer one because, in Layer One, we are going to erase the background.
Let’s go ahead and select Layer One. Just simply start from the background and make the brush a little smaller and softer and start painting. You will see how easily the background is being removed. Don’t be confused by seeing the Black color. It appears because we have black just below the Layer One. You feel like it is so easier to remove background in this way. So, how does it actually work? You tell Photoshop – what color the background is, then you paint on the background, Photoshop analyses the background is and removes it.

Sampling Tools:
At the right top of your Photoshop user interface, you will see these three tools. These three tools care about how we are going to sample the colors. These are called sampling.

Background Sampling: It is the last one we have in that section of the UI. Any of the colors are in the background swatch, that color will be erased. But that is not very useful.

Limits:
Limit settings allow you to limit where you can paint, as the name suggests. It is located in the right of the Sampling tools. To understand the concept, we have a couple of examples for you. Just keep in mind that thoughts are the essential thing in Photoshop.
Dis-contiguous: if we want to make changes of a specific color from the photo, we use this Limit setting. The good thing is if you have more than one color in an image, it will not touch the other colors, even if you accidentally paint on different color’s edges.
Contiguous: Then, if you change to a Contiguous setting, you can paint on a specific edge of an image. So, when it set to Contiguous, it will only remove Pixels, which are physically attached to the color that you are removing.
Find Edges: It is similar to Contiguous, but it allows finding where the edges are. It is kind of more accurate and keeps the edges a little sharp.

Tolerance:
Think about Tolerance as to how many colors you can tolerate. Does it not make sense? Let’s head over to an example. To better understand the Tolerance, we will use the Magic Wand tool and a simple two-color gradient image, which is Green to Yellow.
By default, the ToleranceTolerance will be 50. And now, if you click on the Green portion, you will see a range of colors is selected. Let’s press Ctrl or Command + D. If we set the Tolerance to zero and click again on the Green portion, you will see only a small part of the Green will be selected. And it supposed to be the exact shade of Green. That means, the more we increase the ToleranceTolerance, the more that colors will be affected.

Destructive Process: Part 2
Now, let’s return to our raw portrait, and select the Background Eraser tool, set the Limits to Discontiguous. Because now we will paint around the hair of the model and we want to remove the background from between the hairs, we don’t want to limit it. And the ToleranceTolerance right now is 50%. You can try different Tolerance levels as you need. If you start painting, you will see it will remove the background pretty cool.

Destructive Process: Part 3
After that, we will move forward to remove the background around the body of the model. Since, in general, other body parts have hard edges, and we don’t want to get inside. So, we will select Contiguous and stick with 50% Tolerance. If you start, you will see, it will remove the background steady. So, this is the complete process of removing background in a Destructive way.

The drawback of this method
Now there is one major drawback that we have hinted before. Let’s look at the photo that we are editing. If we remove the background and accidentally paint right on the subject of the picture, you will see the portion is also getting black. If we will do Selected Mask or do any other method involving a mask, we can just paint white in that area and bring that area back. That is the biggest drawback of this tool that it works destructively, and we cannot work non-destructively with it.
But what if we want to do it in a Non-destructive way? Hold that thought for a moment. We are going to talk about how to make this tool non-destructive now. Let’s begin.

Non-Destructive Process: Part 1
To start with it, let’s copy the background one more and named the Layer Subject Non-Destructive. Then bring it the Solid Color Adjustment layer. Afterward, we will hold the Ctrl or Command and click on the thumbnail of the Non-Destructive layer and select the Mask button. You will see the mask will appear.
Now, let’s select the brush and make it a bit smaller and softer and hold the Alt or Option. Then click on the Mask, and then you can paint out the other areas. Make sure the foreground color is Black and fill up the rest of the areas. For the critical areas, if you want to tune it okay, you can also choose the Blend > Overlay and decrease the Flow to somewhere around 20 to 30 percent. Then start painting. You will see how nice it will be working.

Non-Destructive Process: Part 2
If you want to bring back things back, which have been erased accidentally, you can do that as well. You have to choose the Overlay with the same as before and change the foreground color to white. Then press X to toggle between the foreground and the background, and now we can paint right there. When you have selected White, it won’t paint on the Black area. So, we can easily paint the model. You can increase the Flow if you need it.
Now, if you are in good shape, hold the Alt or Option, click on the Mask button, and it’s done. You can blur the portion if anything needs some fine-tuning. To do that, click the Blur tool and blur in the Mask. You can hold the Alt or Option, click on the mask button again to show how it looks. It blurs merely it out, you can smooth it out, and you can do whatever you want. You can modify it in every way possible because this is non-destructive.
So, that was all about the Background Eraser tool. It is a hidden gem if you can use it properly. So, is it better than the Selected Masks? Does it mean that the Quick Selection tool is complete trash? Or, Select Subject is totally useless? Not at all, every technique and tool has its own place. It depends on the situation, the image, the background, and, most importantly, on you.

The essential lights you will need for your subject are a Key and a Hair or backlight. That backlight is necessary to create some separation between your subjects in the background.
• The Key light should be angled off, somewhere between 20 and 40 degrees from your cameras. Then you can add a Fill light to brighten the shadows on the other side to create an exact 3 point lighting setup.
Don’t let these rules freak you out. Filming or shooting with a green screen will be a lot of fun. A flashy background can add a lot to your photo or video production value. The only limit is your imagination.

DIY Green Screen Setup
Unfortunately, the green screen setup requires professionalism to get a high-quality output. But you can make a basic DIY setup to meet your requirements. Though it won’t be enough to get a professional output.
First of all, we do need a green screen. And initially, you don’t need to buy a professional green screen. The best way is to go to your local fabric craft shop. They will have plenty of fabric to choose from. Try to find a sheet or big bit of cloth, which is as close to Chroma Key as you can. And remember, we are on the cheap. So, close enough is good enough.
Now, you have your green screen; go back to that wall that you want to set up as your background. Hang out the green sheet with the wall with whatever you have lying around. It can be a buttload of tape, some hooks anything.
The most important part about doing an excellent green screen is the lighting. Professional green screen setup requires separate lighting, but we are too cheap for that. So we are going to use a simple light system. Go to your local hardware store and get three lights on the stand and one work light and have warm Globes and all.
Have a couple of floor lamps on one side and the work lights on the other. Don’t forget about the backlight. Now the backlight is very important to get a better shot. This is also important to diffuse these lights; however, you can. We can use a baking paper method, but the baking paper does not attach to anything. So you can use tapes or paper clips to attach. These are all supportive things that you will need to set up a green screen in an affordable way.
